It has been 20 years since I started my research on forests in Russia.? The research project I have recently been involved with looks into the relation between forests in Far East Russia, including the Ussuri, the Taiga, as well as the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean, which are some of the richest oceans around the globe in terms of biodiversity.? The research is gradually revealing that it is the forests in Russia that are supporting the rich ecosystems of these oceans through Amur River.? This makes me realize that the Taiga has an important role on a global level and that the benefit that Japan receives from the Taiga is not limited to timber resources.
We should not forget, however, that the utmost importance of the Taiga lies with people who live there, whose lives depend on the Taiga.? The most memorable part of my experience with the Taiga is drinking Vodka with local residents, sitting by the fire and enjoying the bounty of the ocean.? Through my participation in the Taiga Forum, I hope I can contribute to helping local people in their effort of protecting the Taiga.
