A few years ago, I had an opportunity to visit Krasny Yar where the indigenous people of Far East Russia live.? There, intact forests still remain and the Udege, the indigenous people there, continue hunting and appear lively, with their eyes glittering with life.? I don’t believe there are too many other examples of indigenous people who have such energetic and sharp faces.? The source of their energy comes from the fact that the Taiga, from which their traditional lifestyle is based on, is still maintained as an intact forest.? Now, however, the Taiga is threatened with destruction.? Roads are being built in order to carry timber between the south and the north of the Taiga.? Once the roads are completed, the Taiga will quickly disappear, causing the complete destruction of rich ecosystems in the area.
